Q&A

Who should get an OT Driving Assessment?

An OT driving assessment is often necessary when safety or ability to drive is in question. It may involve regular reviews to address changing needs or abilities. You may benefit from an assessment if you are:

  • A person with physical, cognitive, or other impairments that may affect your driving ability.
  • A young person with a disability learning to drive.
  • Recovering from an accident or trauma and seeking to regain confidence on the road.
  • An older driver advised by your local transport authority to undergo an assessment.
  • Unsure whether you can continue driving safely.
What does an OT Driving Assessment consist of?

An OT driving assessment consists of two components, typically lasting 2–3 hours. The process is tailored to individual needs to ensure a thorough and accurate evaluation.

  1. Off-road OT Driving Assessment
    The off-road component includes:
  • A detailed interview covering driving and medical history.
  • Assessment of vision, physical abilities, and cognitive function—all critical to safe driving.
  • Identification of potential vehicle modifications or other requirements for the on-road assessment.
  1. On-road OT Driving Assessment
The on-road component is conducted in a dual-controlled vehicle with the Occupational Therapist and a driving instructor. It evaluates:
  • Physical and cognitive responses to traffic and road conditions.
  • Ability to adjust to real-world traffic scenarios.
  • Road rule knowledge and judgment.

Following the assessment, we’ll provide personalised recommendations, such as:

  • Vehicle modifications to enhance safety and confidence.
  • Strategies for safer driving, like restricting driving to daylight hours or local areas.
  • Additional driving lessons or rehabilitation programs, if needed.

Following the assessment, we may make recommendations to support continued safe driving including:

  • Recommend potential modifications to the vehicle to improve driver performance and confidence.
  • Suggest strategies that may be followed to improve safe driving such as only driving in the daytime or a short distance from home.
  • Make recommendations for management and ongoing monitoring of a driver.
  • Arrange for driving lessons to improve driver learning and safety on the road.
What Does An OT Driving Assessment Cost?

Costs vary depending on the type of assessment, the person’s age, and the funding source (e.g., NDIS or iCare). Contact us for a personalised quote to suit your situation.

What can I expect from an OT driving assessment?

After your OT driving assessment, you will receive:

  • A clear decision on your ability to drive safely, with or without conditions or modifications.
  • Recommendations for vehicle modifications (if required), which may be funded by the NDIS.
  • Support to build confidence and skills through driving lessons or rehabilitation programs.

“Following an OT vehicle modification assessment, our clients can feel confident that their individual needs and safety have been thoroughly considered. Whether it’s adapting controls or improving access, these modifications empower drivers to maintain their independence and safety on the road, ensuring every journey is as smooth and secure as possible.”
