OT Vehicle Modifications Assessment
Occupational Therapist driving assessors are skilled in evaluating the need for and recommending appropriate vehicle modifications to enhance safety, accessibility, and independence for drivers and passengers. These modifications may be necessary to accommodate physical, cognitive, or sensory impairments that affect a person’s ability to drive or travel comfortably in a vehicle.
Vehicle modification assessments consider a variety of factors, including the individual’s specific needs, functional abilities, and the type of vehicle. Common recommendations may include trials of various wheelchair-accessible vehicles and modifications, in collaboration with specialist suppliers. These modifications can include row conversions, lowered floors, specialised passenger seats, docking stations, wheelchair restraint systems, and wheelchair hoists/ramps. By ensuring the vehicle is appropriately modified, individuals can maintain their independence while improving their ability to travel safely and comfortably.
